What is Moringa

Moringa is the complete tree.   While the popular cultivar (moringa oleifera) is a product of India, the botanical roots of moringa are on the African continent, which houses the most number of moringa cultivars (13/14).  There are hundreds of documented traditional uses of various parts of the tree. You can use moringa to purify water, make fire, and treat various ailments, from anemia to cardiovascular ailments and everything in between.

What are the health benefits of moringa

Some have postulated that moringa can be used to replace a multivitamin just because of how much the tree has to offer. It is packed with pretty much everything you need. The leaves have important essential amino acids. It is also high in iron, so it has been recommended as an option for treating anemia. Beyond iron and essential amino acids, moringa has considerable amounts of calcium, antioxidants, folate. This is why it is also recommended as a dietary supplement, especially for children and pregnant women. For this reason, fresh moringa is used in traditional soups and stews across the continent, as well as local salads in northern Ghana.

Adding Lemon to Moringa

Like many plant foods, iron can be hard to absorb because of anti-nutrients. A paper I read recommends introducing an acid to improve availability; pairing it with lemon can be helpful in iron absorption and bioavailability. I am sure it also has to do with the vitamin C content of the lemon, which can help with absorption.

What you will need for this moringa lemon tea

  1. Moringa Leaf Powder. Moringa leaf powder can be found at your local health food store or through many online retailers. The smell and flavour can be akin to matcha as they are both leaves but it has a bit of a sour undertone. It does not dissolve as well so make sure to stir as you drink.
  2. Lemon.
  3. Liquid Sweetener. You can use maple syrup, agave syrup, date syrup or honey.
  4. Hot not boiling water.
